To me, the learning process is two-directional, one where the teacher and the students work together to create an environment that promotes meaningful learning. I am a strong believer in the constructivist approach to learning. I believe that as a teacher I need to help students make connections to knowledge and experiences they’re already familiar with. I think that by teaching this way, information becomes real; it makes sense to the students and makes it meaningful.

I believe that the teacher and student play important roles in the classroom. Without one, the other wouldn’t exist. While teachers are expected to be the only educators in the classroom, I believe that students could equally be considered educators. Students give feedback all of the time, they tell teachers what they’re doing right and wrong, how they can improve, and what methods work best in the classroom. I believe that education is successful when students desire to be lifelong learners. Education goes beyond the school building, the classroom door, and the teacher. When students yearn for a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them, I believe education has succeeded.

I have wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember. I have a desire to make an impact in the lives of children; in the same way many of my teachers had an impact on me. Learning is an on-going process that has no end; we continue to learn throughout our entire lives. As an educator, I am responsible for creating an environment that promotes student learning and creates lifelong learners.
