Name: Obesity Trends in the United States Lesson Plan

Reflection:

This is a health lesson plan I created for my Databases in Education course in the fall of 2003. The lesson is on obesity trends in the United States and is geared toward fifth grade students. For this lesson, the students must take information from databases found on the web, and implement the information into a spreadsheet (ex. Microsoft Excel). The students then compare the data and create a mini-presentation on their findings.

This was a very fun lesson to create. I have not used it in a classroom, but I think students would be interested in finding out obesity trends among regions, as well as across the United States. It would be great if students took the information they learned through their research and mini-presentations (ex. healthy eating, exercise) and applied it to their own lives to become healthier students and future adults. Students could get their parents involved in the lesson, by asking them how they stay healthy and what healthy food choices they make.

I would love to use this lesson in a fifth grade classroom. I think student would really enjoy it. One change I would make to this lesson, would be to give students the opportunity to use other technology applications (ex. powerpoint for their presentations). Students learn in many different ways, and giving them choices keeps them interested in what they're learning.

Standards/Criteria Connections:

Standard One - I saw the students demonstrate new knowledge and application skills that supported their intellectual and personal development through their understanding of new information.
Standard Three - This lesson demonstrates my planning skills by incorporating different subjects and transitions that make sense.
Standard Four - This lesson uses databases, presentations, and discussion to enhance student understanding and performance.
Standard Ten - This lesson would require students to use the computer and use a database program.
