Name: Collage Lesson Plan

Reflection:

This is a lesson plan I wrote for Expressive Arts in the Elementary Classroom in the spring of 2004. This lesson taught the concept of collage and the use of patterns while creating visual arts. The lesson also includes information about snakes and related to other curricular areas, including science and math. I was able to work with a second grade student for this lesson, and receive positive feedback during and after the lesson.

This lesson was very successful. I chose material that interested my student and kept him motivated throughout the lesson. He created artwork that related to the concepts I taught and made connections to prior knowledge as we progressed through the lesson. This lesson went well, because I kept the lesson moving by asking questions and keeping the student actively involved. Everything in the lesson was covered in the allotted time and the lesson was informative.

I plan to use this lesson again, because I taught the lesson well and incorporated a variety of curricular areas into the lesson. I think a classroom of students would enjoy this lesson. However, I might change the informational text to interest a wide range of students. A book on snakes would be appropriate for most boys, but girls might lack interest and create classroom management issues. A book on ocean animals might be more appropriate for both boys and girls.

Standards/Criteria Connections:

Standard One - I saw the student demonstrate new knowledge and application skills that supported his intellectual and personal development through his understanding of new information.
Standard Three - This lesson incorporated different curricular areas and transitioned well.
Standard Four - This lesson involved instructional strategies that allowed my student to become an active contributor.
Standard Seven - I assessed my student's knowledge by having him apply the collage techniques he learned during our lesson into a collage activity.
